Rambling discourse on the stupid things that keep me awake at night
Published on December 23, 2003 By threead In Philosophy
I am keen to set up a new more evangelical arm of the aetheiests movement to preach the no book message and allow all of those who dont believe in fairy stories to have our say. I am particulalry uninformed about most things and only really hold a strong belief that there is no god. What I need is intelligent people to fall in behind me , if we can get a nice modern round number (say 10) unapostles to support the cause and provide a basic understanding of the things I think I am refuting then it seems possible to build a bigger following and seek major contributions to the cause. Most of this we could I suppose give to good causes but I see no moral dilema in syphoning of a significant amount for our selves. If any one is interested could you write with a cv and reasons why we should all be aetheists (it has to be better than just quotting John Lennon) and I will then allow you to be in the first ten. It would be useful if one of the ten had a basic understanding of grammar and spelling.

Man, if only I had the words to explain it taht way before. I'm glad to see you know how it is. I was expecting someone else telling me I was stupid for believing in God. Thank you so much. And yes you did explain it a lot (and i mean A LOT!!!) better than I ever could.
So, you're an engineer? I job-shadowed a chemical engineer. What kind of engineering do you do? Just wandeing.
And, sorry once again. I'm trying to leave everyone alone in here but it's just so tempting that I can't help say something every now and then. Alright.
If it wasn't for me knowing where you were going with those arguments I would have been completely lost. My church pastor gave those arguments to us in a service one day. I just couldn't think of the wording he used. Once again, thanks JESOd, for actually being able to give some sort of good argument. I know I wasn't doing too well and now I'm reall, really, really, going to TRY to leave everyone alone. I just have to read the replies because it's so hard to leave a conversation I"ve been in this long. So, I'll probably be getting yelled at later, bye.
Capt. over and out!

JESOd You seem to be saying that there is evidence that a "designer exists" are these "tell tales " signs deiberately left?

By the way Jiluser I also think that Jesus said things that I can accept as good - I just think it is a shame that he couldnt just be a guy who said good things, the fact that there is a relationship between Jesus and religion enables parodoxical (is that a word?) relationships such as The Nazi party in Germany doing such patently un "christian" things partly in the name of christanity.

Capt Cornbread:
I'm a computer engineer but also have my masters in electrical engineering--cuz it's not that much more effort--
And your very welcome.

threead:
Was that question asking what evidence did the designer --God-- leave behind? ... um... the universe.

And the whole thing about the Nazi stuff. Yes. agreed. It's dissapointing. ><

I never said anything about the Bible. I think that if you weren't Christian, you wouldn't consider the Bible as a history book. Saying that it was inspired by God and therefore true is a circular argument.

If you believe Jesus Christ existed, then you are paying attention to historical facts. If you believe that he is the son of God, you are a christian believer. If you have your doubts, that certainly doesn't mean you are unintelligent. I know plenty of people who crave to have faith but just can't see enough evidence to satisfy their scientific minds.

Those with strong faith try so hard to prove their way is right. You just can't prove God exists and you also can't prove he doesn't. You either believe or you don't. You can't prove anything by the Bible because you have to believe the Bible was inspired by God in the first place. Believe me, I have had plenty of people try to prove it. I like to play devil's advocate to see what kind of argument one can come up with. I had discussions with a Jehovah's Witness friend that used to come over once a week a few years back. She got so frustrated because I wouldn't let, "It says right here in the Bible" be proof of anything. She gave up on me

I don't consider that Bible a history book.. well I do but to an extent. The old testament is basically a history book. And the new testament are the records of Jesus's life. So yes, it is a history book in the least.

Umm... Jehovah's Witness... that's a christian cult.... it's pseudo-chrisitian. I can get them frustrated, too.

Hey I was just thinking. The Agnostics and Spiritualist would love to join you as well ~grins~ They would like to see all religion wiped from the face of the earth, unfortuneately you can't do that without hurting others so nevermind. ~chuckles~ The end of the world will be here in 8yrs anways. It will take care of all of us ~grins~

I love you threead, and so does God, and in the end, that's all that matters! Why haven't you written anything else? I would like to understand more about who you are. Trinitie

I am an average Jock (from Scotland that is) - I dont wish to offend anyone but I am of the opinion that the world would be a better place with no religion -and probably other institutions. In the south west of Scotland (I am from the Highlands) it is quite acceptible (amongst some people) to hate and wish ill protestants or catholics and probably others -dependent on your own religion. Remember the protestants and catholics both believe that they are worshipping Jesus who basically said be nice to everyone. This is a bit rambling (I have the lurgi) but I guess my beef is with religion not belivers (I just happen to be an unbeliver).

If you're going to set up an atheist movement, the first thing you need to do is learn how to spell it or it may look kind of queer over your office door and on your signs. GCJ

Ok, I'm an athiest too, so hurray! But I also respect and appreciate those that can have faith enough to believe in a god, that takes alot, through times of hardship and good times. I don't have that kind of power, I don't want to believe that there can be some sort of force that loves us, but destroys us. I don't want there to be forces that pit man against man, we're better without them.

Threead, I believe in you. Care for some burnt offerings ?

You of course know about The Brights ? Google news releases too.

Interesting and Nice Concept.

I think in First World Countries, gradually, belief in science and human thinking will supplant belief in the supernatural, gods, demons, wizards, witches and angels. Ultimately, because it is more useful.

Some are simply not ready yet, and may not be in their lifetime.
